How to back up pet records and move them to another browser

Export a private JSON backup from Tail Planner, open the organizer in the destination browser and import the file. Import replaces all records after confirmation, so export the destination's current records first if you need to keep them.

Understand what moves and what stays behind

Tail Planner stores pet profiles, routines, completion records, observation notes and appointments in localStorage for this browser origin. It has no account or automatic cloud copy. Opening the website on a second device starts a separate organizer. A backup is a file you download and keep yourself; it does not create a shared household or keep two browsers in sync.

Export before changing browsers or clearing data

Open the organizer where the records currently appear and choose Export backup. Keep the downloaded JSON file in a private location you can find again. Include the date in your own backup inventory. The file contains the details you entered, so treat it like the records themselves. Do not post it publicly or send it to a website support inbox as an ordinary attachment.

Protect the destination before importing

If the destination browser already has pet records, export those records first. Tail Planner's import is a replacement operation, not a merge. You cannot combine two households simply by importing one file after another. Decide which organizer will become your working copy, and retain the other export until you have checked that the result contains what you intended.

Import and inspect the result

Choose the backup in the import control. The app validates the file and asks for confirmation before replacement. Invalid or oversized files are rejected, with a maximum file size of 2 MB. After an accepted import, select each pet and review its profile, routines, notes and appointments. Reload the page once to confirm the browser has saved the records. Keep the original export until this review is finished.

Move from the earlier pages.dev address

Records entered at the old organizer remain attached to that browser address. Open the old organizer using the transfer link on the home page, export there and import at tailplanner.com. The backup format remains compatible. Moving to a new domain does not automatically carry localStorage across, and clearing the old browser data before exporting can remove the only accessible copy.

Quick checklist

Common questions

Can I restore only one pet from a backup?

The current import restores the complete validated backup and replaces the destination organizer. It does not offer a per-pet merge.

Does exporting remove my records?

No. Export downloads a copy. Existing browser records remain until you delete them or browser storage is cleared.
